What is Battery?

Battery is the crime of unlawfully touching someone without his or her permission. The essence of a battery is the actual touching of the person. This can be done by using a part of your body (i.e. punching someone); by using an object to touch the other person (i.e. hitting someone with a stick or bat); or even by throwing something at them (i.e. throwing a rock at someone and striking them with it). In Michigan, the crime of battery is included under the Assault statute.

Maximum Penalties: 93 days in jail and/or $500.00 in fines
